Self care is not selfish. It’s key.

Those two words have so much meaning and the impact self-care has on the direction of your life is immeasurable.

Until recently, to me, self-care meant self-indulgence- treating myself to a massage, facial, a shopping spree or vacation. In essence, I thought self-care was what you did to reward yourself when life was good to you or to pacify yourself when it wasn’t. I was wrong.

Life has been a series of bumps and hurdles for me the past few years, and while I’ve amazed everyone (including myself) with my strength and the ability to power through it all, I also learned that being strong does not mean that I am invincible. Life takes a lot from you even when times are good. I learned the hard way that I can’t forget to fill my own cup. When I don’t take care of my own needs, I cannot go the distance.

The key to a satisfying existence is to constantly be replenishing your mind, body and soul with more sustenance than life takes away. Whether it be in the shape of people or thoughts, toxicity can only affect you if you allow it in. Self-care is ongoing mindfulness of what you choose to include in your life. Yes, it’s what you choose. It’s the foods we eat, the books we read and the company we keep. It’s staking claim to the vessel that is you and filling it with everything it needs to flourish.
